This South Hams seaside hotel has been owned by the Makepeace family for three generations, and the welcome is warm and the service and hospitality genuine and old-fashioned. But there's nothing old-school about the Soar Mill itself, whose rooms are well furnished and thoughtfully equipped, with big bathrooms, free wifi, books and games, and even binoculars for enjoying the spectacular views (and maybe spotting a dolphin or two). You can almost hear the waves, and the glorious coastline is just a step or two away.

Accommodation is spread across several options – all with beautiful views across the rolling hills or down to the cove. Some larger rooms and suites are ideal for families, whilst those looking for a little more privacy can stay in one of the self-catering retreats. Activities are right on hand – there's a decent indoor heated, spring-fed, saltwater swimming pool and their own spa and gym, whilst there's also tennis and pitch-and putt in the grounds, and a games room with snooker and table tennis.

Soar Mill has an award-winning restaurant that offers a seasonal menu, full of locally caught seafood and fresh Cornish delights which you can enjoy from tables overlooking the bay. They say it's where 'fine dining meets family friendly' and what's certain is that Chef Ian MacDonald is all about local sourcing and ingredients (you have to try his delicious pastries and treats), while the newly opened Castaways Café is ideal for younger guests to kick back and relax.

But really the extra beauty of Soar Mill Cove lies in its position, just outside Salcombe in a gorgeous part of the South Hams; it's right on the Southwest Coast Path and in a perfect location for great walks throughout this beautiful part of Devon. It's also dog-friendly, so you can bring your pooch along to share the experience. What else? Well, the nice thing is that if (heaven forbid) anything's amiss, you can talk to the owners themselves – something we think is pretty special these days, rather like the hotel itself.

Journey down a winding country road where the horizon opens up to the glassy blue sea and National Trust surroundings and you’ll find Soar Mill Cove Hotel. From the oldest to the youngest, family get-togethers and gatherings of friends, couples and all combinations in between, Soar Mill Cove’s compelling beauty works its magic on everyone. Dogs are welcome with a big tail wag from Farley and Daisy both golden labradors who help man reception and kids can run free in the lawns and play area.

The South West Coast Path runs in front of the hotel ready to explore the miles of coastline and only a few miles away are the boutique restaurants, stylish cafes and harbour front of Salcombe – one of the most glamorous places in the UK

Our own restaurant! Local seafood – including fresh crab – perfectly cooked steak and homemade desserts are all on the menu at the award-winning, Two-Rosette restaurant to be enjoyed whilst soaking up the sweeping view of the cove. The original Mrs Makepeace once made a pavlova for Audrey Hepburn which still makes an appearance on the menu today. Drinks are served in the cosy lounge area or the Bolly Bar, where bubbles are also a favourite and all guests staying at the hotel are greeted with a Devonshire cream tea on arrival – the perfect way to start any holiday!

Owned and run by the Makepeace family, Soar Mill Cove Hotel offers relaxed luxury with the sand and the sea of the cove on the doorstep. The hotel has one of the best views in Devon with stylish and spacious Garden and Sea View bedrooms, suites, family suites and new eco-self-catering apartments to make the most of this idyllic location. All rooms are complete with everything you might need, and some things you didn’t realise you would for holiday bliss with TV, DVD player, WiFi and an eclectic selection of storybooks, board games and binoculars for spotting dolphins. The discovery spa with saltwater swimming pool, sauna and treatment rooms is a sanctuary to relax and rejuvenate, using Spa Find products.
