Just around the corner from Cool Places HQ, we know the Tommyfield site well and have seen it through all sorts of incarnations in recent years, from trad south London boozer to tapas bar and beyond. But this latest version has the best pedigree yet, part of our favourite south London gastropub chain, the excellent Renaissance Pubs group, and their first foray into accommodation. It's a return to its roots as a coaching inn, and a great location for a comfy London city crash pad, just a tube stop away from central London and walking distance from the river and Westminster (one of the reasons so many MPs choose to live in the neighbourhood). Downstairs is a buzzy pub, which serves good food at lunch and dinner, and great weekend breakfasts, while upstairs are six tastefully appointed double rooms on two floors – reasonable sizes and decorated in pastel shades with stripped-down, whitewashed walls and kitted out with big comfortable beds, Nespresso machines, smart TVs with Freeview and a do-it-yourself breakfast kit in the fridge featuring porridge, juice, etc – though this will only be a starter to your morning feast downstairs at weekends (on which residents get 50% off). Two rooms have baths, and all have decent-sized open, contemporary bathrooms with big power showers. Very much the characterful alternative to local chain hotels or crummy B&Bs – and with good food too.
