When the exhibits in a museum are accompanied by a sign reading ‘please touch’, you know you’re onto a good thing. Adults and kids alike will stroke the stuffed tiger and Shetland pony by the entrance hall, and crane their necks gleefully at the enormous dinosaur skeletons that dominate this stunning gothic building which, to look at, is half Victorian railway station, half church. In addition to the crowd-pulling dinosaurs, there are well presented displays on all types of animals, and upstairs, several tanks housing live insects, including cockroaches and tarantulas. Don’t miss the scale model of the sun and the earth which spans the upstairs gallery.
