Sarehole Mill
Cole Bank Road Hall Green Birmingham B13 0BD
Sarehole Mill is a pleasant if sedate attraction on the face of it: a water mill dating back 200 years, one of only two left in Birmingham. You can visit the grinding room, the bakehouse and the mill pond (home to all sorts of wildlife); plus there are regular events to entice both adults and children. But what lifts this attraction out of the ordinary is its association with JRR Tolkien. author of Lord of the Rings. It was here that the young writer whiled away his childhood days, the memories of which helped form the worlds imagined in his novels. Just across the road you'll find Moseley Bog (accessed via Yardley Wood Road), a nature reserve that inspired the old forest in 'Lord of the Rings', and the museum also has a Tolkien Trail, which recalls the mystical and magical landscapes found in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Birmingham is full of surprises.
