South Queensferry
South Queensferry
For centuries the southern port for the ferry crossing over the Forth Estuary, the village of South Queensferry is the best place for a view of the two Forth Bridges: the classic Victorian iron bridge for trains and the less pretty but still striking 1960s road bridge. It's possible to walk across the latter, and catch a train across the former (Dalmeny is the closest station to South Queensferry) while boat trips to a ruined medieval abbey on the nearby island of Inchcolm offer a chance to sail underneath. A museum in the village tells the history of the bridges and the settlement, a stroll along the narrow main street offers a taste of the village's historic flavour, while various pleasant bars and restaurants offer a more relaxing way of taking in the vista.
