As an inexpensive base for Snowdonia, it's hard to beat Lodge Dinorwig, a small independent hostel that is the perfect place to start your adventure in North Wales. Situated right on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, you can enjoy incredible views of Snowdon, Llanberis and Anglesey while planning your route up Snowdon.
Friendly hosts Simon and Sonni – stalwarts of several seasons in European mountain chalets – seem to have thought of everything you might need to make your stay as comfy as possible. The bunkroom is very cosy, with capacity for 14 people in a set of bespoke handmade bunk beds; bedding is provided and the beds have curtains for extra privacy. There are shared toilets and hot showers (you do need to bring your own towel) and a lounge and café that – given the size of the hostel – never get overcrowded, so it feels like a real home-from-home.
Rates also include an excellent cooked breakfast (served between 9am and 11am), which is perfect before setting off to hike up Snowdon and nearby peaks. The café serves great lunches, and they will do you a delicious packed lunch to take with you if you book in advance; they'll also have dinner waiting for you when you get back to the hostel (again, you need to book this in advance, £12.50 per person – and you can bring your own beer or wine).
The main lure, though, is the location near Snowdon, which you can ascend on foot, by bike (outside the summer season) or on the Snowdon Mountain Railway. Meanwhile the fastest zip line in the world – the adrenaline excitement of Zip World – is only a few miles away. Or just set off from the hostel on any number of circular hikes through the beautiful and dramatic surrounding countryside. It's also a perfect base for groups attempting the Three Peaks Challenge or Welsh 3000s Challenge.

Location
Getting There
The owners recommend the road through Deiniolen as the most direct and quickest route to the lodge. Your SatNav may recommend the route through Fachwen from Bryn Refail but you should be aware that this is a single-track road with very few passing places and is poorly lit with numerous bends.
