The White Lion has stood solidly by the river in Hebden Bridge since 1657 – a coaching inn of the old school, though it doesn't see so many horses these days, and it’s had a recent spruce up and refurb. Don't worry, though, the ancient flagged floors, stone fireplaces, exposed beams and wood panelling are all still there, as is the beautiful, big open fire at the far end of the bar. You can eat your lunch in front of it if you like, or anywhere else for that matter, from cosy dining rooms to riverside courtyards and beer garden. Everything is homemade in the kitchen, from steak and ale pie to a rack of Yorkshire lamb, and there's also a veggie-friendly small-plates menu. They're good on cask ales and artisan gins too.
The biggest change has been in the accommodation – now they have ten lovely, boutique-style rooms with sleigh beds and roll-top baths, which would make a lovely overnight or weekend base for exploring this most ruggedly charming of Yorkshire towns. The rooms are really nicely done, far more hotel than pub in decor and quality, and located either on the first floor of the inn or around the courtyard – the latter rooms also being dog-friendly and accessible to those with disabilities. Some rooms have got king-sized beds and also have space for a sofa and armchair – everyone gets a flatscreen TV with Netflix, spa toiletries, a hairdryer, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. And with one of the Calder Valley's best inns downstairs or across the way, you really don't have any cause for complaint.
