Houses in lofty positions are often described as being 'nestled into the hillside' so we might try to think of something more original to describe The Stonehouses if only it weren’t so apt. Viewed from above, you might miss these turf-roofed holiday cottages as they fit so neatly into their surroundings. And what surroundings they are. Forests, mountains and a loch: everything you come to the Scottish Highlands for. It’s all right outside the floor-to-ceiling windows of these two unique stone houses – as are the rooftops of Ullapool, a handy 10-minute walk away.
These are holiday homes with five-star ratings that are well-equipped and well-tended by their owner-hosts. If you’re not sure what to do in Ullapool, Gavin and Rachel are happy to share their local knowledge. They can advise on everything from sea kayaking to fly fishing to finding a secret beach. They are happy to point you in the direction of a restaurant that'll suit you best or to order locally-caught langoustines to be delivered for your dinner. It’s all there to enhance your stay if you want it. However, even without add-ons, this accommodation and its location are enough for a stay to remember. The views alone are hard to forget.
Curved Stone and Treetop House are both designed to offer a window on what's outside and are spectacular in any weather. Both houses have two bedrooms which frame the view, in addition to a glass-fronted, open-plan living space which fans out under vaulted ceilings. It's a flow that you'll see elsewhere, as walls, windows, staircases and even kitchen surfaces are built in pleasing curves. These are unique architect-designed houses, and while a turf roof and stone walls outside give a feeling of age and place, they are modern in comfort and eco credentials. There’s an air source heat pump with underfloor heating as well as a log burner in each – and if you still think you might be chilly during a winter stay in Scotland, don’t worry, there’s a sauna. There are also drench showers and a roll-top bath in each, plus good WiFi, Sky TV and a kitchen with a wine cooler, coffee machine and Smeg fridge.
Outside on your patio, you can really appreciate the location. The hills are great for walking and rise up behind you and Ullapool’s rooftops are just below – the cultural heart of Ross-shire, with plenty going on in and out of season. There are eateries specialising in seafood – try The Dipping Lugger for a special meal – a museum and even a local theatre. In summer, there are wildlife-watching boat trips too.
