January is a time for starting afresh and planning trips, and also a surprisingly good time to travel, with lots of great winter deals on offer at some unique properties. Here's a rundown of some of our favourite places to visit or just dream about this month...
The Best of UK Travel: Cracking Deals to Kick Off 2025
Like ARC's other properties in Padstow and Painswick, this place certainly has the wow factor. Like it's sister sites, ARC Peaks is designed to host large groups – celebrations, get-togethers, even corporate retreats – and it couldn't be better set up to do so. There's a swimming pool, a hot tub and al fresco kitchen, plus a terraced garden and grounds to explore – and that's before you've even discovered the huge lounge and super-swish kitchen, cinema room and yoga studio, and enough guest bedrooms to sleep up to 30 people. We reckon the guys at ARC really know what they're doing when it comes to creating grand, luxurious holiday homes for groups in superb locations across the UK.
At the bottom of a woodland track in the heart of the South Downs National Park, there's something quite magical about discovering this lakeside wooden cabin – tucked away by the water on its own four-acre plot. You literally couldn't find anywhere better to switch off from the drone of modern life, nor anywhere so secret yet eminently easy to reach from London – just an hour and a half by car. With a giant double bed and roll top bath with lake views, Ditchling Cabin is the perfect romantic escape for a couple. But it would suit a young family too, with funky cupboard beds for kids and a multitude of watersports to try. Or just sit on the deck and drink in the scenery.
If you can't decide between a boutique hotel and B&B, this North Norfolk property offers the best of both worlds – hotel levels of luxury and service married with the cosy and relaxed comfort you can only find in a small, privately owned guesthouse. At Magazine Wood there are three luxury suites to choose from, each with their own terrace with views to the coast. Each suite has a well-stocked fridge, sofa and dining table, binoculars for bird watching, Smart TVs and Netflix. A continental breakfast is delivered to your room each morning and you can order something hot if that's what you want – owners Jonathan and Pip are always on hand if you need anything, and, like all the best B&B owners, are a mine of information on the local area.
Trading Boundaries is a place like no other – a properly exotic place to stay, shop, dine, or even catch a gig, amid the rolling scenery of the Sussex Downs. Originally, a traditional crossroads pub, they've been selling authentic Indian artefacts here for about 25 years, with a wide choice of exquisitely made one-off pieces from the sub-continent. Besides the shop, art gallery and café/bar at the heart of the building there's an array of beautifully furnished, cosy yet contemporary guest rooms. It would be hard to find a more unique place to stay in this part of Sussex, or a more affordable or comfortable one, that's perfectly placed for visiting Sheffield Park, the Bluebell Railway and any number of other local East Sussex attractions. Not only that, they are offering rooms at 30% off right now!
From 24 January, our friends at Rhiw Wood Treehouses are hosting a special St Dwynwen’s Day and Valentine’s Day Package. This includes an artisan “have-a-go” workshop, including a FREE wood-turning workshop, where guests can create their own one-off keepsake like a small vase or bowl. Right now you can also get 10% off in-house spa treatments for couples to unwind and connect. Above all, though, Rhiw Wood is a special place to stay – three beautifully appointed contemporary treehouses on the edge of the woods on a working farm between the Brecon Beacons and the Cambrian Mountains. With dazzlingly dark skies and amazing views of the valleys enjoyed from your canopy level bedroom and hot tub, you couldn't find a more romantic place to celebrate the Month of Love!
