Wiltshire
Coming from London or the east of England, Wiltshire provides your first real taste of the West Country – a county of gentle countryside and man-made mysteries, with some of the UK's most famous prehistoric sites and ancient stone circles, most notably those at Avebury and Stonehenge (both World Heritage Sites), alongside the magnificent cathedral at Salisbury, Wiltshire's attractive county town. It's not really known why this landlocked region in the heart of south central England was of such importance in prehistoric times, but it's worth spending some time here to explore its ancient mysteries: its landscapes are beautiful yet undemanding, with highlights that include the artificial mound of Silbury Hill, just outside Avebury, and the lovely and highly underrated downs and valleys of the Vale of Pewsey. Wiltshire also has a whole host of enticing places to stay: great pubs and inns, B&Bs, country house hotels and glamping – all good alternatives if you want to head west but not Way Out West.Best Places to Stay in Wiltshire Holidays – Accommodation and Places to Stay in Wiltshire I Cool Places
