Historic Sussex Hotels
Whichever Historic Sussex Hotels (HSH) property you opt for, you'll be welcomed with open arms, whether it's one of their spa retreats or their cosy pub with rooms. Family run for three generations, the first place was acquired in 1957: The Spread Eagle. Built way back in 1430 and one of the oldest coaching inns in England, this is a comfortable and charming spot indeed. Located in the heart of the South Downs National Park in the market town of Midhurst, guests can enjoy a treatment in the spa before having dinner in the candlelit restaurant. Second to join the HSH collection was Ockenden Manor in 1987, an impressive Elizabethan house set in eight acres overlooking Cuckfield Park, with 28 rooms, a superb spa and an award-winning eatery. Bailiffscourt came next in 1993 – the ultimate getaway combining countryside and coast. Sitting within 30 acres and just a short walk from Climping Beach, the historic hotel has bundles of character and is home to a first-rate eatery and a wow factor spa in a contemporary barn. The Black Horse came last in 2024, a 17th-century pub just down the road from Bailiffscourt where the seven bedrooms are decorated with antique furniture and nature-inspired wallpaper. The added bonus? Each property under the Historic Sussex Hotels umbrella is dog-friendly. Which will you choose?
