Northamptonshire
It's not the most feted of English counties, land-locked and stuck somewhere in the southern regions of the east Midlands. But most of Northamptonshire is not only easy to reach – the M1 passed right through its midriff – but is home to a surprising number of pretty villages, built of the same sandstone as those of its northeast neighbour, Rutland, as well as a handful of grand houses and country estates, of which Althorp – childhood home of Princess Diana – is only the best known. It's not packed full of actual sights, but as a predominantly rural county it makes a neat weekend break from either London or the towns of the West Midlands. It's also the spiritual home of petrolheads, Formula 1 teams and the racing mecca of the Silverstone circuit, just outside Towcester – worth visiting even on none-race days for its excellent museum of motorsport. Needless to say, there are plenty of places to stay, including a couple of excellent country house hotels and a handful of pubs and boutique hotels.Best Places to Stay in Northamptonshire Holidays – Accommodation and Places to Stay in Northamptonshire I Cool Places
