Roman Army Museum
Greenhead CA8 7JB
What was it like to be a Roman soldier? Here's where you find out. The Roman Army Museum acts as the counterpoint to the excavations at Vindolanda – the museum is run by the same charitable trust – and it's a brilliant introduction to military life on Hadrian's Wall. In a fully immersive experience, complete with 3D film and state-of-the-art displays, you get right under the skin of a Roman soldier – make up your own mind if you'd like to join up as you listen to the recruiting officer or learn at the feet of the hologram Latin teacher. Excavated artefacts from Vindolanda flesh out the experience, while the museum itself is located at an actual fort site, right next to a particularly dramatic section of Hadrian's Wall known as Walltown Crags.
