Morelli’s
14 Victoria Parade Broadstairs CT10 1QS
Step back in time in Morelli’s, a family-owned ice cream parlour that opened in Broadstairs in the 1930s and still boasts its retro, candy-pink decor – formica tables, dimpled leatherette booths, marble fountain, bucket chairs, the lot. The homemade gelato, made with milk rather than cream, is deliciously light and creamy – plug a Sinatra track into the (free) jukebox, order a velvety nocciola gelato and rejoice in a world before industrial ice cream and skinny decaffs were even dreamed of. For a full-on treat, perfect for people whose eyes are bigger than their belly, try a sundae, piled high with chocolate, nuts, wafers and fruits and all kinds of fripperies – the amore, a “double cup of gelato love for two”, is truly a thing of beauty.
Morelli’s may now have branches in Harrods, Monte Carlo, Dallas and Dubai, among other exotic destinations – but we’d bet our Knickerbocker Glory that none are a patch on this.
