There are a lot of things to like about Rocksalt Restaurant and Rooms, not least its enviable location on the South Kent coast. It's a place to enjoy top-notch local and seasonal food, and with four boutique bedrooms as well, there's somewhere sleek to lay your head post-dinner.
The rooms are just a short walk from the main Rocksalt restaurant and overlook Folkestone harbour above – they're comfy, luxurious and rather romantic; the style is warehouse-rustic, with bare brick walls and funky fabrics. Each is individually decorated, but they all share certain features as standard – antique beds, Egyptian cotton sheets, flat screen TVs and modern wet rooms. Taking a family break? There's a two-room option that gives you more space. Continental breakfast is delivered to your door in a hamper, so you can enjoy a lazy breakfast in bed with a zippy coffee from the in-room Nespresso machine – and the two front rooms have floor-to-ceiling French windows which allow you to enjoy harbour views with your croissants. Outside, there are a number of old-fashioned whelk and cockles stalls dotted around the cobbled harbour. Fancy strolling along the coast or into the country during your stay? Hampers are also available to pre-order – the perfect picnic.
Folkestone is a place that's attracting people not only to visit, but to live: creative businesses have moved into the old town, Payers Park has been redeveloped, the Harbour Arm promenade has been restored and the area as a whole has become known as an arts hub – with the Triennial show, a new music and performance venue and a public art collection featuring works by Mark Wallinger and Tracey Emin. There are also plans to revamp the seafront with up to 1000 homes, shops, cafés and bars – a potential that former owner Mark Sargeant clearly saw when he opened Rocksalt back in 2011. Also worth keeping in mind is sister place The Duke of William – also in Kent and just as stylish as Rocksalt.
