Crown Hotel
Main Street Hawes North Yorkshire DL8 3RD
There's a handful of old coaching inns around the main square in Hawes, but it's the Crown that is currently the pick of the bunch for bar meals; it can get really busy on high days and holidays, so reservations aren't a bad idea. It's a definite hit for fancied-up classics, from lamb shank to steak-and-ale pie, while several dishes add a contemporary twist to traditional favourites – potted beef, for example, comes with ale jelly, red onion marmalade, rosemary sea salt and focaccia crisps. Cold days see the interior warmed by no fewer than three open fires, while in summer you can nurse a pint in the back garden or out front at tables set on the old cobbles. Beers are courtesy of Theakston's and dogs are welcome.
