Serving the good folk of Helmsley for almost 600 years, the traditional weekly market every Friday brings the handsome town to life. It sprawls across the old Market Place – the only time of the week it's not used for parking – and brings together a nice mix of clothes, gift and household goods traders alongside food producers and florists. A couple of pubs, a swish hotel or two and some eye-catching delis back on to the square itself, so it's a good destination for a bit of shopping followed by lunch, with a browse of Helmsley's fine old independent shops and craft outlets to follow afterwards. There's usually also a craft fair held on Fridays in the town hall, also on the square.
