Billed as the 'greenest' hotel in Northumberland, Battlesteads is doing simple things really well – like comfortable rooms with a bit of country style that don't cost the earth (in all senses). It sounds straightforward, but not everyone does it successfully. Battlesteads, on the other hand, wins awards by the fistful and charms everyone who stays. The heating's carbon-neutral, the toiletries organic and locally sourced, they grow their own herbs, salads, veggies and fruit, and the excellent restaurant menu is sourced as much as possible from local artisan suppliers. The 17 rooms are all en-suite, and individually styled – and there are two useful family rooms, one with extra bunks, the other with a sofa bed. Dogs are welcome in the four ground-floor rooms, which have also all been adapted for use by disabled guests. We like the little touches that enhance a stay, like the fresh fruit on arrival. And where fancier places might try and show off their wine cellar or meeting rooms, what does Battlesteads do? A tour of the gardens and polytunnels is yours for the asking, which we think is just great.
