Arguably the most spectacular stately home in England, Castle Howard lies 15 miles to the north of York. Building began in 1699, and for over 300 years it's been home to the Howard family. Visitors are let loose inside to admire the sumptuous rooms and the fabulous furniture and paintings amassed by the art-loving earls – the collection includes stunning works by Titian, Bellini and Gainsborough. The gardens, with their wonderful curvaceous flowerbeds, grand fountains, lakes and walled gardens are a particular highlight, and kids will adore the adventure playground.
