Kilmartin Glen
Lochgilphead Argyll & Bute PA31 8RQ
Kilmartin Glen is one of the most intriguing and dramatic historical sites in the UK, and quickly dispels any notions of the old Celtic tribes as uncultured savages. Here, the Kings of Dalriada received French courtiers and savoured fine claret as they surveyed their sweeping lands, and today over 350 monuments are scattered over a broad site in Argyll, with highlights including the wealth of Bronze Age cairns and a soar of striking standing stones. The Kilmartin House Museum is on hand to tell the story. Hike up Dunadd to their old hilltop stronghold and feel the centuries peel back in the Atlantic breeze.
