The Old Forge

There are no roads in or out of the iconic Old Forge's village of Knoydart, which certainly helps put off drunk drivers, and also aids its role as the heart of the local community. Indeed, it's the most remote pub on the British mainland, accessible by way of an 18-mile hike over Munros or a 7-mile sea crossing or by boat across lochs Heaven and Hell. The Old Forge is nowadays one of a few community-owned pubs in Scotland, transferring into the locals' charge in March 2022.

The sea views come for free but the pub offers a wide selection of drinks to thirsty punters, with a focus on supporting local and Scottish producers - the house cask ales are brewed just up the road! – along with food and traditional Scottish music sessions throughout the year. Moorings are available for seafarers, and everyone can be sure of a proper Highland welcome when coming through the door.
