Dunnet Bay
Thurso, Caithness
Dunnet Bay is situated right at the top of Scotland, between Thurso and John O' Groats. Well sheltered from the elements, this white sandy beach is over two miles long and is perfect for sunbathing and swimming – and, when the winds are high, surfing too. Lined by one of the longest expanses of sand dunes in Scotland, you can see oystercatchers, ringed plover and eider ducks; and the visitor centre, half a mile south of the village of Dunnet, can supply binoculars and telescopes for a bit of wildlife spotting. The centre also has fantastic views of the beach and surrounding areas, and excellent exhibitions and displays on the history of the area, the dunes and the birds and flowers which can be found here.
