McLean Museum and Art Gallery
15 Kelly Street Greenock PA16 8JX
McLean Museum and Art Gallery is the sort of museum and art gallery they just don't make any more. It is set in a grand old Victorian building that feels more like a country house than a museum. Unsurprisingly the emphasis is on the shipbuilding industry and all things maritime given the history of Greenock and the Inverclyde region, where once many of the world's greatest ships were born. There are myriad ship models of all shapes and sizes and lots of period photos too, which really help bring the human stories to life. The world wars are touched on too, when Greenock played an important role. The museum is a bit short on high tech gizmos to keep demanding kids happy, but young ones with fervent imaginations with love exploring all the nooks and crannies. They do have free internet access.
