Champany Inn
Linlithgow West Lothian EH49 7LU
If you love steaks then you will never, ever want to leave Champany Inn. This is arguably Scotland's finest steakhouse, although the steakhouse moniker does not really do justice to Champany. They select their own beef then hang and butcher it on site so the quality of the meat is always guaranteed. When it comes to cooking it they are no slouches either, blasting the beef's exterior on their charcoal grill, while keeping the meat red and juicy inside. All the main cuts are here along with more unusual ones like both sirloin and fillet on the bone and a remarkable porterhouse. It is hard to see past the world class steaks, but they also offer fresh lobster and hot-smoke their own salmon. Then there is the cheeseboard. Singular. It is Stilton or nothing. But what a Stilton! They have won awards for the way they store, present and serve their Colston Bassett. Best washed down of course with a glass of 30 year old Pedro Ximenez. That brings us to the wine, stored in a massive purpose-built underground cellar stocked with wines from all over the world, with South Africa a key focus. You probably won't be paying much attention to the decor, which is very much old-world Scottish with stuffed animals and oil paintings in this sturdy old thickstone inn. If you are in a hurry or on a budget, you can dine in their less formal chop and ale house next door. If you are not in a hurry and not no a budget you can stay over in the plush inn.
