Burra Bears
Meadows Road Houss East Burra Shetland ZE2 9LE
Not many people make a living out of sewing teddy bears and fewer still out of a remote dwelling in the Shetland Isles. Wendy Inkster, though, is a unique talent. In 1997 she made a bear as a keepsake gift for her sister. The concept was an instant winner, recycling handknitted Fair Isle patterned Shetland woollen jumpers into bears, and soon Wendy was making them for far more than just family and friends. You can visit her remote studio and pick up a bear; or just send her an old jumper and have her refashion it into a cuddly bear. The bears now come in three sizes and are available in other shops all over Shetland too.
