BikePark Wales
Gethin Woodland Centre Abercanaid Merthyr Tydfil CF48 1YZ
Opened in August 2013, BikePark Wales is the UK’s first purpose-built mountain-biking centre. There are twenty-three downhill trails in total, with quirky names like Coal not Dole, Enter the Dragon and Half Cut – catering to everyone from first-timers to experts alike. The more experienced can snake down the 491 metre Gethin Mountain, located just outside the town of Merthyr Tydfil in the Welsh Valleys. The trails were designed by Welsh downhill mountain bike champion Rowan Sorrell, and are maintained by a full-time crew. A fleet of minibuses provides an uplift service, whisking you and your bike up to the summit, though more hardcore mountain-bikers can head back up under their own steam, if they prefer. Bike-hire is available from the onsite shop, and there’s a good cafe in which to swap stories and refuel at the end of the day.
