Located on the edge of the North York Moors, these two cedar-clad glamping pods were crafted and installed by Chris and Alison Barnfather on their rural countryside property in 2021, and they make a terrific glamping destination by any standards. Surrounded by woodland, it's a true hidden sanctuary, beautiful landscaped and nestled amid willow trees, next to a large pond that’s a haven for wildlife. It's very easy to get to but very peaceful, and Chris and Alison will make you very welcome indeed.

The pods themselves are spacious and stylish: each has an en-suite shower room and a kitchenette kitted out with everything you need, from a fridge, hob and microwave right down to spoons, spatulas and farm-themed mugs. They also come with a little dining table, a sofa that can fold into a bed and a full-size double bed, so  they are ideal for a couple or a family with small children. Bedding and towels are provided, and outside there's a south- facing patio with a hot tub where you can sit and soak like the ducks in the nearby pond.

There's plenty to do nearby in what is a beautiful rural location. To the east, a footpath leads through the trees up Whorl Hill, or you can follow a path south to the abandoned ancient village of Whorlton, where there’s an old church and a ruined castle. The site is also very close to the Cleveland Way and the Coast to Coast route, making it a popular location for long-distance walkers. Whorlton Pods also sits in ideal mountain-biking territory, with popular trails around Guisborough Woods and Osmotherley,  while local market towns like Stokesley, Northallerton and Helmsley all offer plenty of opportunity for pottering, shopping and of course eating in some choice pubs and restaurants. There are also a handful of  National Trust spots nearby, including Fountains Abbey, Mount Grace Priory and Roseberry Topping, to name only a few.

Nearby

Whorlton Pods is on the western edge of the North York Moors, so there are plenty of good walks and attractions on the doorstep (and it's a 45-minute drive to the coast, to popular spots like Staithes and Whitby). It's a 10-minute zip down the A172 to the National Trust-owned ruins of Mount Grace Priory, House and Gardens (01609 883494). Walk through the recently renovated gardens, enjoy the scenery from the onsite café or explore the ruins of the medieval monastery before visiting the reconstructed monk’s cell. Roseberry Topping is just over 15 minutes away, if you choose to visit then you’ll also be able to walk through Newton Wood while you’re there, full of equally stunning scenery. From the summit of the Roseberry Topping hill, you’ll be able to see panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, taking it all in while you recover from the challenging climb.

Food & Drink

There are several pubs within walking distance. The nearest is the Sutton Arms (01642 700382) around 15 minutes away – dine out in their marquee area under their fairy lights or order off their takeaway menu and enjoy their dishes back at your pod. But you can also stroll 20 minutes or so cross county to the two pubs in Swainby, passing a ruined medieval castle (Whorlton Castle) along the way. There's the Black Horse Inn (01642 7 00436) and the Blacksmiths Arms (01642 700303), as well as the Rusty Bike Café (01642 688549) by day.
