Opened in 1931, this cute Swiss-style chalet is is in fact the oldest YHA hostel still in operation, and enjoys a brilliant Somerset location, close to Glastonbury, Wookey Hole Caves and superb walking and cycling on your doorstep, much of it through National Trust land. The hostel has recently been completely refurbished, and has accommodation that ranges from 25 beds in a mixture of private and dorm rooms to a number of dog friendly camping pods that each sleep four people.
These are fully waterproof and slightly elevated for a comfortable night’s sleep, and are equipped with roofs that open for gazing at the stars. They have LED lighting, comfy beds and bedding, and a table and bench outside for al fresco dining. The newest ones are tall enough to stand up in and have a futon that doubles up as a seating area. You also pitch your own tent if you have one, and in the hostel itself there's an open plan kitchen/diner where you can prepare your own food nd also communcal toilets and bathrooms – though note that dogs aren't allowed in the main building.
Dogs are also welcome at nearby Glastonbury Tor, a National Trust-managed landmark that is according to local Pagans) home of the King of the Fairies, and is worth the climb to the 15th –century castle at the top for the view alone. Not only that: the are perfect paw-fectly positioned for some memorable walkies in the surrounding Mendip Hills and Somerset Levels.
