Situated in the pretty village of Woodditton, just outside Newmarket, it's third time lucky for this cosy Cambridgeshire pub, which was refurbished a few years ago before suffering a devastating fire in 2019. It has since come back even better and stronger, reopening in 2020 with much fanfare to a local community that were glad to have their village pub back. Not only that, they have added nine guest rooms in an adjacent barn, and they serve excellent food, making it one of the cosiest, comfiest places to stay in an area that is honestly short on good accommodation.

Like Chestnut's other properties, (including the nearby Moulton Packhorse), The Three Blackbirds is the sort of place you'll like if you favour pubs with a modern twist. It has been carefully updated, retaining the best of its original features, with bare brick walls, beams and ancient fireplaces, but with splashes of colour and retro furniture that remind you it's the 21st century. The rooms are in a purpose-built barn next door, and include regular doubles and family rooms, some of which are dog friendly; five are on the ground floor, three on the first floor, and they all come with super-king-size beds with high-quality mattresses, decent-sized Smart TVs, fast wifi and tea and coffee-making facilities – and spacious bathrooms with rainfall showers and Bramley toiletries. As for the food, it's a deliberately classic and rather delicious menu, focusing on local and seasonal produce, including hearty delights like pigs head terrine and cider-braised pork alongside crowd-pleasing favourites like fish and chips and a very special Newmarket sausage and mash with red onion gravy. Breakfast is an equally satisfying, plate-service affair, while they even have a menu for dogs, featuring items to gnaw, chew and drink. They also boast a private dining room – The Gun Room – so are well set up for parties and meetings.

Finally there's the location, which is perfect for visiting Newmarket – the town is just a couple of miles to the north of the pub – but also very handy for both Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds, which are only 20 minutes' away by car, as is the Imperial War Museum at Duxford. Whether you're interested in these places or not, it's nice to have them on your doorstep, but the real draw of the Three Blackbirds is that it's only an hour or so's drive from London. We couldn't think of a much better place to wind up on a Friday night.

Wonderful experience

We stayed overnight before a friend's wedding. We had the warmest welcome and had a delicious meal in the bar. The food was excellent and the ambiance was relaxed, friendly and welcoming. Our room was absolutely perfect, beautifully decorated to a very high standard, very comfortable, tranquil and spotlessly clean. Even the most demanding guest could not find anything to dislike! We had the loveliest stay and will definitely be coming back. Wonderful place and highly recommended.

Delightful cottage style hotel with friendly attentive staff. Great bar with cosy atmosphere, and restaurant with great food! Room was very well appointed in a peaceful location with great countryside views. I would definitely recommend! I can't think of any criticism. This was exactly what I was looking for.

Most definitely returning!

We went there last night after searching for dog-friendly pubs. It was super helpful having a map online you could download to go on a dog walk prior. We enjoyed going on the studland walk and then sat in the restaurant for dinner. The pub was well catered for dogs, the atmosphere was fantastic & the food even better. The sharing steak tasted amazing & our boys 8 & 5 said their food was the best dinner ever. We will most definitely be returning! Thank you for a lovely evening!

Definitely coming back again soon

This is the second time I’ve stayed at this lovely inn. The rooms are spacious and finished to a high level. Making a great place to stay either on business or as a family getaway. The pub itself is really cosy and the bar staff are both friendly and professional. The food menu is great too. I’ll definitely be coming back again soon

An excellent base and comfortable accommodation and a bonus for dog owners

Beautiful accommodation in a lovely countryside setting. Rooms are separate from the main building. Modern decor. Excellent for people travelling with dogs. The biggest bed I’ve ever slept in. Clean and large rooms. So quiet and tranquil. Local walks are a must. Excellent breakfast. Staff are friendly. We will be back!

Super stopover

Beautiful appointed room at the back of a typical English country pub (with great food). Very quiet, nice touches like the Illy coffee, high-quality toiletries and soft furnishings.
