A historic thatched pub situated in the pleasant rural village of Lyddington, not far from Uppingham, the Marquess of Exeter's 17 comfortable guest rooms not only provide an opportunity to experience this lovely corner of Rutland, England's smallest county, but also gives you the chance to enjoy some really exceptional Indian food at the same time. Ever since the awarding-winning Michelin chef Krishnapal Negi took over the the kitchen here, the restaurant's reputation has soared (his previous London restaurant in Richmond, London, won a Bib Gourmand).
The food is exciting and most importantly delicious, inspired by the Indian Himalayas where the chef was born. It makes a perfect accompaniment to a pint or two of local ale before retiring to your room – spotlessly clean, with cosy beds, tea- and coffee-making facilities and surprisingly good wifi for such a peaceful, rural location. Service, too, is brisk and efficient, with staff who couldn’t do more to make their clientele feel at home, and you may be pleased to know that the pub is dog-friendly and also serves regular pub grub in 'The Bar at the Marquess' for those who prefer it.
