It's not quite the celebrity honeypot it used to be, but Champneys’s Bedfordshire location was probably the UK’s first ever ‘health and spa resort’, founded back in the Sixties at Henlow Grange, a former Cistercian priory in the midst of some lovely wooded grounds. Like all the Champneys branches, it has a huge variety of facilities – a 25-metre pool and hot tub, thalassotherapy, sauna and steam room, two gyms and treatment rooms offering everything from a massage and reiki to all kinds of body and face treatments. Guest rooms vary from spacious ‘Superior’ rooms in the main house to ‘Standard’ rooms in a newer wing; most rooms have been fairly recently (though a few have not).
The hotel has a small café close to the pool, and also a restaurant with a contemporary, Scandinavian feel. As you would expect, the food is deliberately healthy, and booze not really on the agenda, but breakfasts are very good and in any case food and drink is probably not why you came to Champneys in the first place. Instead, make the most of what is a relaxing building in a tranquil location, and spend a few days wandering around in your robe enjoying the pool and other facilities. You will feel better for it, we guarantee!
