This trim, well-run three star hotel sits in a remote spot on the extremely remote Ross of Mull on the second largest of the Inner Hebrides, Mull. Once the Ross was home to thousands of crofters, but they were packed off to the New World during the Clearances and the area has never really recovered, It is, though, epically beautiful, with the ruined villages only adding to the atmosphere of the rugged hills and white starched sandy beaches. The The friendly staff are spot-on too, and the hotel’s bedrooms well kept, and some have sea views. Breakfasts are generous and evening meals available on request – well worth doing so if local Knockvologan lamb and king scallops are on the menu. The lounge awaits afterwards, with a telescope to help you scan the waters for dolphins and whales, or the skies for eagles. And there's a gorgeous sandy beach just a ten-minute walk away.
