Nestled in dunes overlooking a seven-mile beach and the Atlantic is Another Place, The Machrie, a contemporary 43-room hotel on the Isle of Islay, with one of the world's most impressive golf links. But this isn't just somewhere for lovers of the game: it appeals equally to those seeking relaxation, awe-inspiring landscapes, first-rate food, treatments, and activities like fat biking and wild swimming.
Known as the 'Queen of the Hebrides' and one of the easiest islands to reach off the west coast of Scotland, the location doesn't get more stunning or peaceful. And with the hotel's relaunch by Another Place in the summer of 2024, there are even more reasons to visit, including a range of stylish rooms, suites and family lodges, a modern art collection, a screening room for movie nights, a games room and boardgames, and the 'wild garden', a Scandinavian outdoor experience with hot and cold tubs and a sauna. Back inside, which bedroom you lay your head down in will depend on how much space you desire (although none are small) – options include 'Cosy', 'Comfy', 'Comfy Luxe' and 'The Islay' suite. Go for a lodge and make the most of two bedrooms, a separate lounge with a pantry kitchen, and a patio. For those after "the best in the house", it's all about the 70-square-meter 'Ben Hogan' duplex, complete with south- and west-facing floor-to-ceiling windows, plus an open-plan living, dining and kitchenette area. Whichever you opt for, take in glorious countryside, golf course or ocean outlooks. Some are dog-welcoming, too.
Golf fans will be in their element: the on-site links course is ranked among the Top 100 in the UK & Ireland. Dating back to 1891, it was originally laid out by Willie Campbell and redesigned by David J. Russell in 2018 as a championship masterpiece. Set on dunelands bordering Laggan Bay, it's suitable for all handicaps. If you're searching for something a bit different, 'Hebrides', the 19-hole social putting green, brings fun and accessibility to the hotel's offering, with twilight illumination and glow-in-the-dark balls. There's also the 'Wee' course, a six-hole playground with zero bunkers. After a day on the fairways, enjoy a meal with a view at 18 Restaurant & Bar, where the menu celebrates Scottish produce, including Islay seafood and shellfish. The Courtyard and downstairs lounge is a more relaxed option – open daily until 5pm, serving seasonal dishes featuring local ingredients, from venison burgers and lobster mac n’ cheese to steak frites.
For days out, explore the scenic surroundings by fat bike, hike to the highest peak for golden eagle spotting, or go kayaking while keeping an eye out for seals. The Oa and Loch Gruinart RSPB nature reserves are also popular for wildlife. Whisky drinkers are spoilt for choice, with nine well-known distilleries on the island: enthusiasts should check out the Three Distilleries Pathway, a winding route where you can take pitstops at Ardbeg, Laphroaig and Lagavulin. But soon enough, you'll no doubt be drawn back to Another Place, The Machrie and all it offers.
