For a boutique taste of Scottish country-house living, this stylish little lodge not far from Stranraer has a lot going for it. Some fascinating history for a start – it was featured in ‘The Thirty-Nine Steps’, and was once a secret meeting place for wartime leaders. Set in landscaped grounds that stretch right down to the sea, where they have their own private cove and sandy beach, it’s got the kind of hideaway vibe that makes for a romantic night or two away in one of the more remote corners of Dumfries and Galloway.
There are just ten named rooms and suites, with views either of the gardens or over to the sea, and a different atmosphere in each one. ‘Churchill ‘is where Winston actually stayed, with a super-king-sized sleigh bed, antique bath and original fireplace. Or choose ‘Bay’, with a Victorian tester bed, a window seat overlooking the Irish sea, and glorious afternoon sun and sunsets. The fine-dining restaurant is lovely too, candlelit at night, but not at all stuffy and formal, with more sweeping views and a daily changing tasting menu (included in the price). Chef Tony Pierce is the star in the kitchen, and the locally caught halibut on the multi-course tasting menu is perfectly prepared. The best seats are in the windows so book ahead for these. It’s a pretty special experience all round, a real spoil-yourself Scottish treat.
