Though on every visitor’s must-see list, this 17th-century coaching inn is nonetheless a cut above the usual tourist pub. A sight in its own right, it’s known as a place where airmen drank – and signed the roof with soot signatures – during World War II, and also as where Francis Crick and James Watson announced their discovery of DNA. This hot spot is busy in the summer season, and as a result a little impersonal, but still well worth a visit. There's real ales on tap, decent food and it couldn't be more central if it tried. A good place to sip a pint and find yourself absorbed in reading every name on the ceiling!
