The grande-dame of all Cambridge hotels, the University Arms looks better than it has ever done following a multi-million-pound refit that has added a sheen of modern Classical style to its traditional buildings ranged along one side of central Parker's Piece. They've been welcoming guests here for nigh on two centuries, but everything has moved up a level – from the majestic, columned entrance and sumptuous Edwardian interiors to in-house treatment rooms, concierge services and complimentary bikes for touring the city
The light-filled rooms and suites – almost 200 of them, across four floors – are simply delightful, hung with Cambridge scenes, supplied with books, and featuring bespoke leather-padded writing desks, beautiful fabrics, ottomans and armchairs, and luxury bathrooms. The suites are something else, with private roof terraces and extraordinary city views over Parker's Piece. The hotel thinks of itself as a '21st century salon' and there's something in that, when you consider the book-filled public area that is The Library or the stunning brasserie, Parker's Tavern, which is a cool, all-day dining joint serving everything from spag bol to slow-roast Norfolk duck.
