Fitzbillies
52 Trumpington Street Cambridge CB2 1RG
All Cambridge was appalled when this long-standing bakery and tearoom closed in early 2011 – Stephen Fry even tweeted his despair – but thankfully it reopened the next summer under new ownership, and, even if its subsequent refurbishment has left its appearance a little bland, the heavy, sticky Chelsea buns produced here since 1922 remain as fabulous as ever. Afternoon tea is always popular; and it has also raised its game with a dinner menu of pricey but good modern European cuisine. Happily back where it belongs, serving to locals and tourists alike, Fitzbillies is a proper Cambridge bakery.
