Durham Castle
Palace Green Durham DH1 3RW
Standing on the opposite side of Palace Green from the Cathedral, the stumpy Norman castle is the university’s oldest college, handed over in 1837 by the last Prince Bishop after his funds fell short. Because it’s a hall of residence, access is somewhat limited, although guided tours (45mins) show enough to get an idea of its lengthy history and layout – you’ll be led through the 15th century kitchen, down to the chilly Norman chapel and up the spectacular Black Staircase, originally a freestanding structure reaching 57 feet, now braced by plain columns.
