Shildon National Railway Museum
Shildon Co Durham DL4 1PQ
The sister branch of York’s National Railway Museum, Shildon packs just as much of a punch, with its wonderful collection of glorious locomotives and chunky, workaday wagons. As well as spending hours staring at your favourite engine, you can explore the goods sheds and the parcel office, and take a ride on the museum’s own steam train (days vary, ring for details). You can also visit the Hackworth Museum, a fine, terraced house preserved as it was during the lifetime of Timothy Hackworth, the illustrious 19th-century engine designer who ran his own locomotive business here at Shildon.
