A Riverside Walk
Durham DH1
One of Durham’s greatest pleasures is to head to the river and walk one mile along the shady footpath from just beneath Elvet Bridge to the 12th-century Framwellgate Bridge. The path snakes its way around the peninsula – look up and you’ll see glimpses of the cathedral peeping through the trees. You’ll probably have to dodge a few rowing coaches on their bicycles – and block your ears as they yell encouraging words to their comrades on the water – but aside from this, enjoy the peace and quiet.
