Durham Market Hall
Market Place Durham DH1 3NJ
The market hall in Durham is a beauty, dating back to the 1850s, with over fifty stalls set out under a Victorian cast-iron roof. There's lots of traditional shopping to be done here – everything from big knickers to pet food – but given that you can also buy a guitar, a Turkish lamp and a halibut, were you so minded, there's enough to occupy any market fiend for an hour or so. You'll also find stalls outside in the Market Place every Saturday, a farmers' market every third Thursday of the month (this is good for locally grown and reared produce), and a big annual Christmas festival market over the first weekend in December. For a drink afterwards, pile into the Market Tavern on Market Place, which is a bit spruced up these days but still has a bit of old Durham about it, especially at busy market times.
