Dun Cow
37 Old Elvet Durham DH1 3HN
Refreshingly unstudenty, and definitely unreconstructed and traditonal, the Dun Cow is a great city-centre pub that still does things the old-fashioned way. It's a half-timbered affair dating back centuries, with separate entrances up an alley to two bars – lounge at the back, snug at the front. It's roaring hot inside if the fire's lit, with locals cooling off by downing pints of Castle Eden and other real ales. Food is simple and cheap – chip butties, bowls of pasta, big sandwiches and picked eggs. If the pub has a vibe (and vibe is far too 'now' for the Dun Cow) then it is simply cosy drinking for proper pub aficionados.
