The Shakespeare
63 Saddler Street Durham DH1 3NU
Old-time Durham, miraculously preserved on the city's main student street, while all around is cocktails, lounge-bars and cafes, the Shakespeare pub is thankfully none of those things. That's not to say you don't get students in here, but what you also get is pork scratchings, real ales, little old men with dogs, crusty academics and the odd rather bemused tourist. It's a bar straight out of backstreet Ireland, with its wooden floorboards and little round tables, and we just love it. Haunted too, so they say, though tell us a place in Durham that isn't. Anyway, you've been told. Go for a pint, it's obligatory.
