This is a fabulous café – but you do have to walk up a very steep hill to find it! That's all to the good since it marks you out as in the know, and your reward is the best, most inventive cafe food in Durham. We're talking impeccably sourced deli platters, big stuffed sandwiches that roam the globe (like a pastrami New Yorker or a Viet-inspired Banh Mi), a classy veggie grilled haloumi special, amazing cakes, pink hibiscus lemonade – we know, stop already, you're hungry. There's proper Italian coffee and hot chocolate too. So, about that hill . . . just keep heading up Claypath, it's on the left at just about the point you need oxygen.
