For a great day out for kids of all ages, don’t miss the little narrow-gauge steam trains of the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway – it’s a rattling ride on open-to-the-elements carriages that swoop up one of the Lake District’s most attractive valleys, hidden in the deep west between the coast at Ravenglass and the high peaks around Hardknott Pass. There are stations en route for family walks and trails, a station café and a tiny hamlet at the Dalegarth terminus. There’s even the possibility of taking the train up and biking back down the valley on an exciting off-road trail.
