There's a smart, contemporary feel to the decor here with a nod to the rustic setting – think comforting sheepskin rugs and sandstone feature walls. The family also made a strong commitment to ‘keeping it local’ with beds, furnishings and even the windows all being supplied by local traders. You’ll also find homely touches such as freshly-baked cake each day and homebaked biscuits in the rooms, locally sourced toiletries and fascinating family photos on the walls.
Perhaps the most spectacular feature of all is the hot tub, just outside beside the pond, with breathtaking views down towards the rugged screes of Wastwater (England's deepest Lake) and Scafell Pike (England's highest mountain) – cast your eyes the other way and you'll see the Isle of Man. In the summer it’s a relaxing place to sit and enjoy the views; come winter, when the surrounding fells are covered in snow, it's truly magical.
This is also, for our money, one of the Lake District's most super dog-friendly B&Bs. Four-legged friends are allowed in three of the ground floor rooms and there are two large fields on the doorstep where you can enjoy a good run in the mornings and evenings. There’s a stunning walk leading right from the door, deep into the local countryside, as well as a vast array of other local trails just a short drive away. When you all return muddy, soggy, and ready for a rest, you’ll find a drying room to store your gear.
Your helpful host Faith is a wealth of local knowledge with plenty of cracking recommendations on the best walks, pubs, places to eat and even local T'ai Chi, yoga, and meditation practitioners if a holistic holiday is more your thing. Gosforth village is just a stone’s throw away and has a variety of wonderful pubs and restaurants where you can enjoy a tasty plateful of local grub. And there's a well-stocked honesty bar and snack box to tide you over. Your ever-helpful hosts can even provide packed lunches for days out – and with those epic surrounding fells calling, you'll need all the sustenance you can get.
