Sudbury Hall
Sudbury, Ashbourne, DE6 5HT
Magnificent Sudbury Hall, built by George Vernon in the second half of the 17th century has a number of extraordinary features, including the unique Grinling Gibbons limewood carving in the Long Gallery (plus fine portraits of Charles 11's mistresses!) and the Main Hall's stunning staircase (which Austen fans will have spotted in the BBC's Pride & Prejudice.) Next to the hall is the fascinating Museum of Childhood which delights kids and grown-ups alike; there's a reconstructed Victorian schoolroom and nursery complete with games and toys from the era - dive into the dressing-up box and embrace your inner scullery maid or chimney sweep! During school holidays the National Trust runs special days for kids - they can learn old crafts, hunt for treasure and spot wildlife in the fabulous gardens and meadows, whilst you kick back in the cafe with a cuppa!
