The Loaf
Victoria House, The Common, Crich, Matlock, Derbyshire. DE4 5BH
After a traipse round the fascinating museum in Crich, drop in to this busy and vibrant artisan bakery, delicatessen and café (there's a branch in nearby Matlcok too) for a sarnie built with their own bread and a bowl of delicious homemade soup. My favourite, though, is the house pork pie, with balsamic onions, chutney and a slab of Lincolnshire Poacher cheese. The deli sells a wide range of specialist bakery products, homemade café food and deli-style groceries. They make their own cakes, pizzas, pies and quiches too, and it's a great place to buy your picnic components if you're planning a moorland yomp. If you're staying nearby you might also want to join them on one of their regular pizza nights (a typical one might be smoked salmon, black olive and buffalo mozzarella) or enroll on a one-day bread making course. Stand aside Mr Hollywood.
