Strines Inn
Strines Bradfield Sheffield S6 6JE
Not strictly Derbyshire (or is it? The jury's out ..), this handsome stone pub is on the stunning Strines road which runs from Penistone into Derbyshire and is a good start to your Peak District odyssey. It's no-nonsense (no Farrow & Ball makeover here) so expect horse brasses, open coal fires, swirly carpets and battered mismatched furniture. The welcome's warm, though, and the homemade, hearty food will raise a smile – not a frozen lasagne in sight, but steak & ale pie for carnivores and three-bean chilli for the others. It prides itself on well-kept real ale, and Sheffield's Kelham Island Brewery is well represented – try the Pale Rider Ale, it's brilliant. There's tons of room to sit outside, including a large grassed area for the kiddies to run free. You'll struggle to get here in the winter so make the most of it before the snow falls ..
