This Derbyshire longhouse dates from 1873 – a former barn and cottage set amidst hills, fields, huge skies and total and utter quiet. Your hosts Philip and Vivienne have won so many gongs they'd blush if we listed them here. Suffice it to say you'll be right royally looked after. Vivienne's breakfast – served in the impressive beamed and flag-floored dining hall – will set you up for a day's walking. Maybe some local black pudding, eggs and sausages, Derbyshire oatcakes and homemade bread, or poached haddock?. It doesn't much matter which of the four bedrooms you're given, they're all super-comfy, with big beds, lovely linen and goose down duvets. Views are long and green, and a couple of the rooms lead straight out to the gorgeous garden. All the must-see spots are easily reachable; Chatsworth, Haddon, Hardwick, Lyme Park and Castleton, Buxton and Bakewell too. But it's the walking most people come here for. There are any number of sensational routes from the door and you'll find plenty of maps and routes to pore over in the elegant lounge.
